What are gypsum wall panels?
Gypsum is a mineral material used to make decorative plaster panels. The term 3D wall panels describes their raised design; gypsum wall panels describes the material. A panel can therefore be both. The relief creates areas of light and shadow across the finished wall.
Kandes produces paintable gypsum panels in a range of patterns, including geometric and softer, wave-like designs. Some models offer LED integration. Dimensions, depth, weight and lighting arrangements should be checked on the specification for the individual model.
These decorative panels are different from the upholstered wall panel beds in our bedroom range. Choose the collection that matches the material and effect you want.
Choose a design for your room
Start with the wall as a whole. Consider how the pattern repeats, how much of the surface you want to cover and where furniture will sit. A close-up product photograph shows the texture; a room photograph helps you judge its scale.
- Geometric panels offer angular and repeating designs.
- Soft Forms panels offer curved and flowing patterns.
- Classic panels provide another decorative direction to compare.
- Kandes LED panels let you explore designs with lighting options.
Compare a sample in the intended room before deciding, where one is available. Look at the relief in daylight and evening light, and ask about the sample options for your selected design.
Measure your wall and estimate coverage
Record the wall width and height, then note skirting boards, doors, windows, sockets and other interruptions. Keep all measurements in the same unit. Photograph the wall and record anything your installer will need to work around.
Wall area = width × height. For example, a 3 m wide wall that is 2.5 m high has an area of 7.5 m². If the selected panel measures 0.5 m × 0.5 m, each panel covers 0.25 m², giving an area-based estimate of 30 panels. This example is not a universal panel size or an order recommendation.
The final quantity also depends on the arrangement, cuts, openings, reserve and any pack-size requirements. An area calculation alone cannot show where the pattern or cut edges will land. Use the Kandes wall planner to select a model, enter your measurements and review the layout before requesting a quote. Confirm the final order with the team.
Plan the paint finish and lighting
Kandes gypsum panels are supplied for priming and painting. Discuss the desired colour and finish with your installer and follow the recommendations for the chosen panel and coating system. The colour in a product photograph is not necessarily the finish supplied.
Raised patterns can look different as light moves across them. If you are considering an LED design, check the exact lighting components and controls included, where power is needed and how the installation will be accessed. Arrange suitable electrical advice before committing to the layout.
Check installation requirements before ordering
Ask your installer to assess the wall condition and suitability for the chosen panel system. Use the current model-specific installation instructions to plan preparation, fixing, joint treatment and finishing. Allow for the manufacturer's storage, acclimatisation and drying requirements in the project schedule.
This buying guide does not replace technical installation instructions. Refer to the Kandes installation and maintenance guidance and the documentation for your selected model. For a commercial project, request the relevant product and performance documents for your project team to review.
Understand the full project quote
Compare the cost of the finished wall, rather than looking only at a price per panel. Ask which items and services are included and which need to be arranged separately:
- The selected panel model, quantity and any reserve.
- Delivery arrangements for your postcode and access requirements.
- Wall preparation and installation labour.
- Adhesive, jointing materials, primer and paint.
- Lighting components and electrical work, where relevant.
- Any samples or additional project requirements.
To help us review your enquiry, provide the model name or SKU, measurements, postcode, preferred timescale and any useful room photographs. Use the wall planner to prepare your layout and request a personalised project quote. If you are unsure which design to choose, contact our team first.
Before you request your quote
- Shortlist your preferred panel designs.
- Measure the wall and note openings and obstacles.
- Check the selected panel's dimensions and specification.
- Discuss preparation, finishing and any lighting with your installer.
- Confirm the quote's inclusions, delivery arrangements and applicable terms.
Frequently asked questions
Are all 3D wall panels made from gypsum?
No. “3D” describes a raised design rather than a particular material. Check the product specification. The Kandes collection covered by this guide is a gypsum panel range.
Can gypsum wall panels be painted?
Kandes panels are paintable. Follow the recommended preparation, primer and paint guidance for the selected model and finish. Confirm those choices with your installer before starting.
Can I use gypsum panels in a bathroom or kitchen?
Do not assume that a decorative panel is suitable for a wet or splash-exposed area. Explain the location and exposure to the team and installer, then check the manufacturer's guidance for the chosen product and finish.
Are Kandes panels made in Yorkshire?
No. Kandes describes itself as a Swiss brand with production in the European Union. Its gypsum panels should not be confused with Airah Bespoke's upholstered bedroom products.
Can I see a sample before planning a full wall?
Explore the Kandes sample collection or ask our team about availability for your selected design. Confirm the sample details and any charges before ordering.
How do I get a price for my wall?
Choose a design in the wall planner, enter your wall details and request a quote. Review the final layout, panel quantity and project inclusions with the team before placing an order.
